Classroom management checklist.
This list is provided to help support you in the day-to-day running of your lessons. It is not an extensive list of all the techniques that you could be using but a basic check-list of thing that “should” make things run more smoothly in the classroom.
This is also available as a mini bookmark sized list here. It contains the same information as below but in a briefer format, so it should initally be used in conjunction with the article below.
Before the lesson: Preparation is key:
£ Have a seating plan in place.
£ Have your resources prepared and to hand.
£ If doing group work have the groups pre-organised and give students responsibility roles.
£ If you have a TA/EAL support assistant in the lesson, brief them on the content so that they can support you.
At the start of the lesson: Expectations & reinforcement:
£ Manage the space outside your classroom, set clear uniform and behaviour expectations.
£ Meet and greet the students at the door, be welcoming but reinforce uniform and behaviour expectations.
£ Have a starter for the students either on the board or to hand out, something to focus their minds.
£ Welcome stragglers in, make a note of names and deal with them later, tackling them as they appear can become confrontational.
During the lesson: Own the space and the learning:
£ Circulate around the room, check learning, provide support. You can also help students by assessing and verbally feeding back on what they need to do to make progress.
£ Be prepared have the resources to hand – a slick presentation will help to maintain good behaviour.
£ Use the school behaviour policy and apply it consistently to any and all students.
£ 5:1 rule, 5 lots of praise to a room for every 1 negative.
£ Have consistent expectations in the lesson (Eg for answering questions hands up, random names etc)
£ Have the “Learning Objective” displayed during the lesson and refer to it during the lesson to show students how they are making progress.
£ Use a variety of activities / teaching & learning styles so to include all students.
£ Include a plenary that links to the Learning Objective, to allow students to assess the progress that they have made.
£ Have a clear end to the lesson, again have a routine that the students follow.
General admin:
£ Have students available to welcome any visitors and to explain the lesson.
£ Have a welcoming and positive classroom climate (displays etc)
£ Mark students work regularly and provide constructive criticism / feedback to help them improve.
£ Be consistent with praise and sanctions, stick to the school policies
£ Inform parents if you have concerns, they don’t want to hear about problems when it is too late.
