What is coaching?
Coaching is a support mechanism that is very much self directed and self propelled.
It is a process by which you are supported by a coach or facilitator to identify something you wish to improve on, to set yourself a goal you wish to achieve. This could be a skill a part of your practice, getting a new job... The choice is yours!
Coaching is not mentoring - you will not be given the answers - you will be supported to identify them yourself.
Coaching helps you (the coachee) to discover your own answers based on your own values, perspectives and your own unique self.
I'm a Director of Learning, Advanced Skills Teacher and SLE, specialising in coaching, mentoring and CPD. I am an experienced ITT and NQT trainer and mentor, having been an NQT assessor for a number of years and an ITT professional tutor with PGCE, GTP, BEd, SCITT and Schools Direct. I am a coaching trainer and coach, I deliver coaching training locally, as well as supporting staff new to mentoring.
Why am I writing about coaching?
I am a coach and mentor, a coaching trainer and I see the benefit of non-directive, non-judgemental coaching every day.
The more I coach and train coaches the more I use these skills in my every day conversations, the more I reflect on my own practice and self-coach myself when I see problems ahead.
